Patch Placement Guide: How to Arrange Patches on Tote Bags and Sweatshirts
Share
You have picked your patches. Now, where should they go? Placement is what makes a patched tote or patched sweatshirt look curated instead of random. Here are the simple rules we follow and 6 layouts that always look good.
The 3 rules of patch placement
- Start with a focal point. Your largest patch or your initials go first, usually centered.
- Balance, do not mirror. Spread smaller patches around the focal point so the design feels balanced but not perfectly symmetrical.
- Leave breathing room. Negative space makes each patch stand out. Even with 5 patches included, less is often more.
Patch placement on tote bags
Layout 1: The statement center
One large patch, like LA or New York City, centered on the front with 2 or 3 small patches around it.
Layout 2: The monogram stack
2 letter patches side by side in the center with a small design patch above or beside them.
Layout 3: The scattered collection
5 patches at slightly different angles across the front for a collected, vintage look.

Patch placement on sweatshirts
Layout 4: The varsity chest
A word patch or your 2 initials across the center chest, like a classic college crewneck.
Layout 5: The left chest
A single small patch over the heart. Minimal and preppy.
Layout 6: The flanked monogram
A design patch in the center with one initial on each side. It looks especially good with a sport patch like tennis rackets.

Where to put a monogram
- Tote: centered on the front, or lower right for a subtle touch.
- Sweatshirt: center chest for a bold varsity look, left chest for a subtle one.
